A Curator’s Manifesto: Reclaiming the Third Place for the Dancers
We have reached the end of our series on the "Alligator vs. Jitterbug" phenomenon. We have looked at the neuroscience of Motor Scaffolding and the cautionary history of the "Cabin Fever Throwdown." Now, it is time to look forward.
If we are to preserve the Carolina Shag as a living, breathing "Third Place," we must transition from being "Keepers of the Flame" to being Curators of Pure Experiences. This requires a fundamental shift in how we program our events and how we occupy our dance halls.
Here is a manifesto for the future of our floor.
The Floor is a Sacred Space, Not Real Estate
The recent trend at venues like the Spanish Galleon—selling tables and seating on the expansive dance floor—is a tactical failure of data-driven goals. While it provides short-term revenue, it introduces "commercial noise" that breaks the kinetic flow of the community.
The Rule: A dance floor should be a "Furniture-Free Zone." If an area is intended for movement, it cannot be commodified for stationary observation.
Prioritize "Active Participation" over "The Spectacle"
When an event becomes a "listening event," it dies. We saw this in Raleigh when the "hoards" of standing observers replaced the active dancers.
The Action: Organizers must design room layouts that prioritize the dancer-band feedback loop. Bands should be positioned to play to the feet, not at an audience. Lighting and sound should be optimized for the 3' x 6' space of the dancer, not just the front row of a stage.
Reject "Alligator-ism"
We must hold each other accountable for the culture we create. If you are standing on the hardwood and you aren't in your six-count, you are an "Alligator."
The Discipline: Protect the perimeter. If you are there to watch, do so from the sidelines. Leave the floor for the "Jitterbugs" who are providing the motor scaffolding the music requires.
Substance-First Programming
A "Curator of Pure Experiences" chooses quality over "showmanship." We don't need "viral" trends or high-energy spectacle; we need the Quiet Brain state that comes from deep, mindful connection with a partner and the groove.
The Standard: Select bands and DJs based on their ability to hold a pocket that dancers can live in. Avoid the "noise" of bands that prioritize volume over rhythm.
The 55+ Demographic as "Keepers of the Standard"
As we pursue Active Adult Excellence, we have a responsibility to lead by example. We are the generation that understands the value of the "Third Place"—a location outside of home and work where community is built through shared activity.
The Legacy: We must refuse to be relegated to a seat. A "Titan" stays on the floor because movement is the hallmark of longevity.
The Path Forward
The "Cabin Fever Throwdown" was lost because the community stopped participating and started watching. We can prevent this from happening at SOS and our local clubs by demanding Substance over Spectacle.
Let’s reclaim the 3' x 6'. Let’s turn down the commercial noise and turn up the groove. I’ll see you on the hardwood—moving, not watching.
Strategic Note for the Collective:
This manifesto is more than a blog post; it is a blueprint for how we should run our classes and attend our socials. If we don't curate the experience, the "Alligators" will.
