The "Slot" vs. The "Grid": Is the Architecture of Our Dance Clubs Killing the Carolina Shag and other partner dances?

Image
As a Recreation Specialist, Dance Instructor and a long time advocate for the Kinetic Connection of partner dancing, I am gravely concerned. A quiet shift is happening in Carolina Shag and other vernacular dance clubs and partner dance venues,  across the Southeast and beyond, and if we don't look at it critically, we may be watching the "slow death" of a beloved dance in favor of something far less connected. The Rise of the Solo-in-a-Group We’ve all seen it: the lights dim, the Beach Music or Rhythm & Blues stops, and a high-energy pop or country track comes on. The floor—once a series of linear "slots" where couples held a non-verbal conversation—suddenly transforms into a stationary "grid" of individuals performing synchronized choreography. Line dancing is fun, accessible, and requires no partner. But when it begins to move from a "supplement" to a "substitute," the very quality of our instructional opportunities and socia...

More Than Steps: 5 Surprising Promises We Make to Every New Dancer

Image
Have you ever felt like the last decade flew by in a blur? You’re not alone. As adult life settles into a routine, our subjective experience of time tends to accelerate. We crave novelty, a deeper presence in our own lives, and a more meaningful way to connect with the world and the people around us. What if there was an activity that could not only get you moving but also enrich your mind, body, and spirit in ways you never expected? At Underhill's Swing and Shag Dance Collective, we believe partner dancing is a powerful, scientifically-backed solution. This article reveals five surprising promises we make to every new dancer who joins our community—promises that go far beyond simple exercise to offer a profound enhancement to your life. 1. We Promise to Slow Down Time It’s a counter-intuitive fact: as our lives become more routine, our brains form fewer unique memories. This "thins out" our memory load, making the years feel shorter in retrospect. The most effective way...

The Sawdust on Our Shoes: A Story from Crewe, VA

Image
"Are you sure this is it?" Pam asked from the back seat, her voice laced with skepticism my wife, Denise, and I had come to expect from past visits with friends. I glanced in the rearview mirror, a smile playing on my lips. "Positive," I said. "This is it." The car crunched to a stop in the gravel lot. Before us stood a plain, concrete block building that looked more like a forgotten warehouse than the destination I’d promised. The last light of Saturday was fading, and the building offered no clues to the life inside. I saw Susan shoot Pam a look that clearly communicated, What has he gotten us into? Inside the Modern Woodmen Dance Hall in Crewe, VA "Alright," I laughed, glancing over at Denise in the passenger seat before turning off the engine. "I know what you're thinking. But the rule of this place is simple: you can't judge it from the outside. Just trust us." We grabbed our cooler and the bag of snacks we’d packed. The fr...

The Dance Floor is Waiting: Why Movement is Your Best Anti-Aging Secret

Image
For too long, society has promoted the belief that aging equates to a steady deterioration of physical and mental capabilities—what I like to call the "long slow route" of aging . This negative stereotype can feel like a self-fulfilling prophecy, often leading us to believe we are less capable as we get older. But what if this pervasive idea of inevitable decline is fundamentally wrong? The key to unlocking renewed vitality and proving this old idea incorrect lies in the exhilarating, complex, and joyful activity of dancing . Dance is not merely a hobby; it’s a powerhouse activity that strategically works your mind, body, and spirit, paving the way for a vibrant new beginning at any age. Laughter lines are a roadmap of a life well-lived, and a beautiful testament to a friendship that's still dancing strong. Step Into Strength: Guarding Against Falls and Frailty Dance directly counters the physical limitations associated with the "long slow route of aging." It’s ...

Two Sides of the Same Coin: Unpacking the Differences Between Ballroom East Coast Swing and "Street" Swing (Like the Philly Bop or Carolina Shag!)

Image
Ever hit the dance floor, thinking you know "East Coast Swing," only to encounter a completely different vibe? You're not alone! While often lumped under one name, East Coast Swing actually has a fascinating duality: the polished, structured ballroom version, and the relaxed, soulful "street" version, embodied beautifully by dances like the iconic Philly Bop and Carolina Shag. Let's dive in and unpack these two distinct, yet related, worlds of swing. The Ballroom Belle: East Coast Swing When you sign up for a typical swing class at a dance studio, you’re most likely learning Ballroom East Coast Swing . This style emerged in the 1940s, primarily as a simplified, standardized version of the more complex and improvisational Lindy Hop. Its goal was to make swing accessible to a broader social dancing public and suitable for formal ballroom settings. The dance is known for its "rock step, triple step, triple step" rhythm, with a clear, repetitive patter...

The Secret Life of the Carolina Shag: Why It's More Than Just a "Beach Dance"

Image
When you think of the Carolina Shag, you probably picture a warm summer night, some cool "beach music," and a couple gliding effortlessly across a dance floor. And while that image is a big part of the shag's appeal, it only tells half the story. The truth is, the shag is a much more complex and unique dance than it gets credit for. It's not just a simpler version of swing; it’s a living museum of dance history and a masterclass in partner communication. A Hidden History in Every Step Digging into the shag's history is like finding a hidden message in a bottle. What we call "the shag" today actually started as something else entirely—the Carolina Jitterbug . In the 1940s, as the fast-paced big band swing music of the era began to slow down, so did the dancers. The bouncy, energetic steps of the jitterbug transformed into the smooth, low-to-the-ground shuffle we know today. But those old moves never really went away. They just got a makeover. Take the Boo...
